Umbrella furnished equipment and technical support for a number of theater
companies and for the
Great Salt Lake Fringe. Umbrella's managing director, Lee Hollaar, helped with the opening of
Utah Arts Alliance's new
Alliance Theater at
Trolley Square by helping them understand the existing technical facilities in
the space, specifying and helping them install a new lighting system that can
be used for a variety of performances, and loaning cables and power cords
needed for their first production. He continues to provide support and
training for their staff. We have also provided the long-term loan of one of
our follow spots.
Mary's Little Monster, our first try at a director mentorship,
was complicated by the Covid shutdown. More details are available here.
In December 2021 we continued our mentorship program for aspiring directors through a project at the
Salt Lake School for the Performing Arts.
Six writers and six directors have chosen from current students and recent alumni
from the University of Utah and Westminster.
The writers were each tasked with creating a 10 to 15 minute segment that will be cast
primarily from twelve student actors from SPA.
More details are
available here.
A Brief Waltz in a Little Room, 23 Short Plays
About Walter Eyer, which opened on August 21, 2019, at the Urban Art Gallery
in the Gateway, was a co-production with Sackerson.
Our artistic director, Jamie Rocha Allan, directed some of the segments and assisted the directors of the
others. Umbrella was responsible for the technical aspects of the show, with our
technical director, Cara Pomeroy, supervising the designers for each of the
rooms and providing the materials that they needed. More details are
available here.
Co-producing On Pitch
Performing Arts' November 2021 production of Rent.
Umbrella provided mentorship for its directors
and the staff for the scenic design and construction, as well as covering the
additional expenses.
More details are available here.
We also provided OPPA with a long-term loan of ten
ellipsoid lighting fixtures (reconditioned after previously given to Umbrella
as part of our "lighting fixture rescue" program) and a dimmer pack to control
them.
Love Costs More is a short film written by Umbrella's artistic
director, Jamie Rocha Allan. It is co-produced with Salt Lake based film
production company Overcranked
Pictures. Filmed entirely in Salt Lake City, the production worked with
Hogle Zoo and the Urban Arts Gallery, who kindly donated their time and
resources. The actors involved are all local performers. The plan for the film
is to submit it to various festivals and competitions around the country.
